For Shopify brands that buy ahead of demand

Shopify inventory planning app: Shopify inventory forecasting and demand forecasting for every variant

Shopify tells you how many days your stock lasts at last month's pace. It does not tell you what December will sell or when to order from a supplier who needs eight weeks. Storekeeper forecasts each variant and turns the forecast into an order quantity and an order-by date.

The short answer

Shopify has no demand forecast. Its Inventory remaining report divides stock on hand by the average units sold per day over the last 28 days, and Sidekick can read that data back to you. For a real forecast you add an app. Prices on the Shopify App Store run from $9 a month for simple sales predictions to $449 for multichannel planning, and most tools that also draft purchase orders charge $49 to $199 by store revenue. Storekeeper forecasts every variant with trend, seasonality and supplier lead time from $49 a month.

Where Shopify's numbers stop

Why Shopify's days of inventory remaining is not an inventory forecast

A 28-day average looks backward. Buying decisions look forward by the length of your supplier's lead time, and that is where the two answers split.

Situation in early October Shopify days remaining (28-day pace) What actually happens What a forecast says
Gift set: 300 units, selling 5 a day, 45-day lead time 60 days, looks safe until December November and December sell 3x faster; sold out around mid-November Order about 700 more units by early October so they land before the peak
Sunscreen after Labor Day: 400 units, 6 a day in August 67 days, reorder soon Sales fall to 1 a day; a reorder now sits until spring Do not reorder; stock covers demand well into next year
New color launched 3 weeks ago, growing 20% a week Average dragged down by the slow first week Sells out before the next factory run Trend lifts the forecast; flagged as order now

The order quantity is forecast demand over the lead time and the period until your next order, plus safety stock, minus stock on hand and units already on order. The full method is on our demand forecasting software page.

What Shopify gives you

Shopify inventory planning with built-in tools

Useful, and worth knowing before you pay for an app. None of them produces a forward forecast or a reorder quantity.

Tool What it does Where it falls short
Inventory remaining report Days of stock left per variant = units on hand divided by average daily sales over the last 28 days, grouped into ranges No seasonality, trend, lead time or order quantity
Sidekick Answers plain-English questions about your sales and inventory reports Calculates sell-through from a window you pick; it does not run a forecast model
Shopify Flow Emails you when a variant drops below a number you type A fixed threshold; see our Shopify low stock alert app page for why that fires late
Purchase orders in admin Record supplier orders and receive them into stock You type every quantity; compare options on our Shopify purchase orders app page
Stocky Used to suggest order quantities for POS Pro stores Shut down on August 31, 2026; see our Stocky replacement guide
How it works

From Shopify sales history to a purchase plan in four steps

The demo above runs the same steps on sample data, so you can see the forecast and the reorder list before you connect a store.

1

Connect Shopify

Storekeeper reads orders, variants, vendors and stock by location. Six months of sales is enough to start; twelve months lets the forecast see last year's peak.

2

Forecast every variant

Each size and color gets its own forecast with trend and seasonality over a 30, 60 or 90-day horizon, recalculated every day.

3

Add lead times

One lead time per vendor with product overrides. The forecast over that window sets the reorder point and safety stock.

4

Order what the plan says

A reorder list with quantities and order-by dates. On Growth the lines roll into draft purchase orders per supplier.

What you get

Shopify demand forecasting that ends in a buying decision

A chart of next month's sales is interesting. These are the outputs a buyer needs to actually place the order.

Seasonal forecasts per variant

Q4, back to school and summer peaks are built into the forecast instead of being guessed with a manual uplift percentage.

Order quantity and order-by date

How many units to buy and the last day to order so they arrive before the sell-out date.

Size curves that follow sales

Size M and size XXL of the same product get their own numbers, so a restock does not repeat last season's pile of slow sizes.

Every channel in one forecast

Growth adds Amazon, eBay and Etsy sales to the same plan. See our multichannel inventory management page.

Per-location planning

Stores on Shopify POS see stock and demand by location, so the reorder list shows which store or warehouse will run short first.

Cash in slow stock

Variants with months of cover are listed with the dollars tied up, so the budget goes to what is about to sell out.

Who needs a forecast

When Shopify's own reports are enough, and when they are not

Plenty of stores never need a forecasting app. Here is the honest line.

Shopify's report is enough if

You sell steady, non-seasonal products, your supplier ships in under a week and you carry a few dozen SKUs. Check days remaining once a week and reorder by hand.

You need a forecast if

Lead times run four weeks or more, a big share of revenue lands in Q4, you launch new colors or sizes every season, or best sellers keep selling out while slow variants pile up.

DTC brands buying from overseas factories

With a 60 to 90-day lead time, the holiday order is placed in September. That decision needs a forecast of December, not an average of August.

The honest split: a Shopify-only store under $100k a year gets a forecast and POs from Inventory Forecasting Hero at $25 or Prediko at $49. Revenue-priced apps get more expensive as you grow even when your catalog does not. Storekeeper is priced by locations and channels, plans Shopify together with marketplaces, and shows the cash stuck in slow stock. Plans are on the pricing page.

Frequently asked

Shopify inventory forecasting questions, answered

Does Shopify have inventory forecasting?
Not as a forecast. Shopify's Inventory remaining report estimates days of stock left by dividing units on hand by average daily sales over the last 28 days, and Sidekick can answer questions about that data. Neither models seasonality, trend or supplier lead time, and neither suggests an order quantity. For that you need a forecasting app from the Shopify App Store.
How do I forecast inventory on Shopify?
Export at least a year of sales by variant, forecast demand for each variant over your supplier's lead time plus the time until your next order, add safety stock, and subtract stock on hand and open purchase orders. That is the reorder quantity. Doing it in a spreadsheet works for a few dozen SKUs; above that, a forecasting app recalculates it daily for every variant.
What is the best inventory forecasting app for Shopify?
It depends on size. Inventory Forecasting Hero ($25 a month) suits small Shopify-only stores. Prediko ($49 to $199 by revenue) and Monocle ($47 to $129) add purchase orders. Inventory Planner by Sage fits large assortments. If you also sell on Amazon, eBay or Etsy, or want a price that does not rise with revenue, Storekeeper starts at $49 a month.
How much does Shopify inventory forecasting software cost?
On the Shopify App Store, forecasting apps cost from $9 a month for basic sales predictions to $449 a month for multichannel planning. Most apps that forecast and also create purchase orders charge $49 to $199 a month, often banded by store revenue or product count. Inventory Planner by Sage quotes its full product individually.
How far ahead should I forecast inventory?
At least your supplier lead time plus your reorder cycle. A brand ordering monthly from a factory with a 60-day lead time needs a 90-day forecast, and holiday stock needs a forecast of November and December by late summer. Storekeeper forecasts over a 30, 60 or 90-day horizon and sizes reorder points from the lead-time window.
Can I forecast inventory for multiple Shopify locations?
Yes, with an app that reads stock and sales by location. Storekeeper reads stock and sales for each location, forecasts every variant, and flags which store or warehouse will run short first. See our inventory replenishment software page for how reorder points are set.
What replaced Stocky forecasting?
Shopify shut Stocky down on August 31, 2026 and did not build its suggested orders into the admin. Shopify now points merchants to admin purchase orders, Flow alerts and Sidekick, none of which forecasts demand. Stores that relied on Stocky moved to a forecasting app. Our Stocky replacement guide maps each Stocky feature to its replacement.
