To sync inventory across multiple sales channels, connect every channel to one inventory system that holds the single source of truth for each SKU, map each listing to one shared internal SKU, and let the system push the same available quantity to every channel and update it on each sale, return and restock. Real-time, event-driven sync is safer than a scheduled window, because a delay of even a few hours is long enough to oversell a fast mover during a busy period. Get the SKU mapping right first; almost every broken sync traces back to the same product wearing different codes on different channels.
Overselling is the expensive failure this prevents. When the same units look available on Shopify, Amazon and eBay at once, you sell stock you do not have, then cancel orders and take the hit to your marketplace metrics. What does it mean to sync inventory across channels?
Syncing inventory means every channel reads from one shared stock number per SKU instead of keeping its own private count. The system that holds that number is the source of truth. When a unit sells on any channel, the system lowers the available quantity and pushes the new figure to all the others, so a sale on Amazon immediately reduces what is offered on Shopify and eBay. Do this well and you never promise stock you cannot ship. This is the core job of multichannel inventory management.
How do I sync inventory across Shopify, Amazon and eBay?
Connect each channel to one central inventory tool, map every listing to a single internal SKU, and turn on real-time sync so the shared quantity updates on every order, refund and restock. That is the whole shape of it, but the details in each step decide whether it holds up under volume.
1. Pick one source of truth
Decide which system owns the real stock number. It might be a dedicated inventory tool, or one platform designated as the master. What matters is that only one place is authoritative, and every other channel follows it. Two systems both claiming to own the count is how stock drifts. If you run a Shopify store plus marketplaces, the inventory tool, not any single storefront, is usually the cleanest master.
2. Clean and map your SKUs
This is where most syncs fail. The same product must carry the same internal SKU on every channel, so the system knows that the Amazon listing and the Shopify variant are the same unit of stock. Missing, duplicated or inconsistently formatted SKUs silently break the link and let availability drift apart. Before you switch sync on, audit your catalog and confirm every active listing maps one to one to an internal code.
3. Choose real-time over scheduled sync
Some tools sync on a timer, for example every few hours; others react to each sale as it happens. Event-driven, real-time sync closes the gap where overselling lives. A four-hour window is fine for a slow catalog and dangerous during a flash sale, when a popular SKU can sell out on one channel long before the next scheduled update reaches the others.
4. Handle bundles and multipacks deliberately
A bundle that contains three units of a SKU has to decrement that SKU by three, and a multipack listed separately from singles needs its own mapping back to the shared stock. Set these rules up front. Bundles and kits are the second most common source of sync errors after SKU mismatches, because one sale quietly moves several stock numbers at once.
Does Shopify sync inventory across channels on its own?
No. Shopify tracks the stock inside your Shopify store accurately, but it does not automatically keep that stock in step with Amazon, eBay, Etsy or a separate point of sale. To sync across channels you add a multichannel inventory tool that connects to each one and acts as the shared source of truth. The same is true of most single-platform storefronts: they manage their own inventory well and leave cross-channel syncing to dedicated software.
How does syncing prevent overselling?
Overselling happens when the same physical units are counted as available in more than one place. The two requirements are real-time updates and clean SKU mapping. Miss either one and stock drifts back apart, which is why the setup work matters more than the brand of tool you pick.

Syncing solves the accuracy problem: it stops you selling stock you do not have. It does not solve the harder question of how much to buy and when. For that you need a demand forecast per SKU that pools sales from every channel, so you plan against total demand rather than a fragment. A SKU selling 40 units a month on Shopify and 60 on Amazon has 100 units of real demand to reorder against; forecasting each channel alone understates it. Combined forecasting feeds a single reorder point so you buy once, correctly, for all channels.
There is a financial angle too. Once orders flow across several marketplaces, reconciling what each channel actually paid out against what you shipped becomes its own chore, and it is easy to lose the thread of true margin per SKU. Keeping a clean read on what each channel actually earned you is what turns synced stock into an accurate picture of which products are worth reordering at all.
The order to set this up
Start with clean SKUs, then pick your source of truth, then connect channels and turn on real-time sync, then layer forecasting on top. Doing it in that order means each step rests on the one before: you cannot forecast total demand reliably until the channels agree on what a SKU is, and you cannot sync reliably until the SKUs are clean. Rushing to connect channels before the catalog is tidy is the single most common reason a multichannel setup keeps overselling after go-live.
